These are some of my documentation in September 2011 when i visited my hometown Balikpapan, East Borneo, and i was gladly surprised seeing how much the changes they made to this area. This was my ‘hanging’ place when i was a child, my elementary school friends live here and believe me… it was horrible with so many holes on the Ulin wood bridges, and houses were so dense, and no plant or tree at all! 
but look at this place now… this is when i feel that pictures speak louder than words, lol have a look guys!

Your hometown is very green…I can’t find that atmosphere in Malang….
The local government of Balikpapan can make policy sattlement base on environment, and the people give positive respect…, I think those are some examples should we do as planner……
Hehe makasih rif, kamu harus jalan-jalan ke sana kapan-kapan… Kota itu memberi saya banyak pembelajaran tentang arsitektur, bahkan sebelum saya kuliah di jurusan ini
Ada Arsitektur Kolonial khas rumah panggung di bukit-bukit yang sekarang jadi kompleks perumahan Pertamina, ada taman-taman kota yang terpelihara dengan baik, ada wilayah relokasi korban kebakaran yang berhasil mengembangkan diri jadi satu pemukiman yang representatif, ada penerapan konsep waterfront city, ada jalan-jalan kota yang bersih, ada hutan kota seluas 1/4 luas kotanya (bener-bener di tengah kota lho)… jalan-jalanlah ke sana sebelum kamu menyusuri jalan-jalan di Eropa dan Jepang

Memang kota Balikpapan sungguh indah, jauh dengan kota2 di jawa. Masyarakat dsini masih banyak yang peduli dg kerapian kota dengan tetap menjaga fasilitas2 umum yg ada dan tidak merusaknya. Tapi dg semakin pesatnya perkembangan kota Balikpapan, maka banyak pengembang2 perumahan yang juga melakukan ekspansi besar2an untuk pengembangan perumahan, dan ada beberapa pengembang yg melakukan ekspansi ke wilayah2 yg seharusnya bukan diperuntukkan untuk perumahan, tanpa memperhatikan amdal dan hanya untuk mendapatkan keuntungan yg sebesar-besarnya.

our cities need a lot more leader like pak Tjutjup, bu Risma (walikota Surabaya), dan pak Joko Widodo (walikota Solo)…
saya juga merasakan hal yang sama dengan yang anda katakan di comment anda. perkembangan akhir-akhir ini di banyak kota di Indonesia memang semakin memprihatinkan, termasuk di Balikpapan. memang ada perkecualian untuk beberapa kota, misalnya Surabaya dan Solo yang alhamdulillah masih memiliki pemimpin yang peduli akan keberlanjutan kota mereka, namun sebagian besar kota lainnya tampaknya belum memiliki pemimpin yang seperti ini. saya jadi rindu kota Balikpapan saat kepemimpinan H. Tjutjup Suparna beberapa tahun yang lalu, yang sangat peduli akan kebersihan dan keindahan kota Balikpapan. no body is perfect, but i think he has done something great
